Unfortunately, this was not allowed by the city, and these types of permits were only given to those who were either production companies or utility companies. Undeterred, Kenneth Cole changed the name of his company to include the term "production" and applied for a permit on the grounds that he was filming a full length movie called, "The Birth of a Shoe Company." His success was unfounded. Not only did he shoot that film, but he also sold some 40,000 shoes within just two days.
